Q2 How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

All three promotional pieces work really well as they all share a theme and they cohere well together especially the Digipak and the Magazine advert. The combination of all three of our promotional package is really effected as they share the same theme which you can easily refer to one piece to another which helps with the promotional side. Are ancillary tasks are good a promotion one another because we have kept many of aspects the same texts/font and picture this means its easy recognisable as the same band and its an effective way of promoting the band.

Due to the increasing use of the internet and digital download are indie promo is useful in promoting because it can be easily accessed on the internet such as youtube.com because this where the majority of people nowadays tune in to watch music promos so its a good way to reach are potential audience and get awareness because there has been a decrease in people tuning in music channels such as MTV Viva and kerrang ect. however are music promo would still be effective promotion as that is straight to the audience your trying reach.

Due to the uprising of the of e-books and online markets etc are an magazine advert would be effective being is not a way exhibited to the large segment of the market. nowadays on line is the place to buy such as itunes because the traditional stores such as hmv etc. have become an uncommon way purchase music this is why we should have produced an on-line advert instead of magazine as we miss out on that the mass audience because its uncommon to buy music magazines such NME .

Q3 What have you learned from your audience feedback?

When looking into indie genre we came to the conclusion to ascertain information through a questionnaire as it gains information quickly and from a wide range of audience opposed to do personal interview which you would only gain a few opinions.from the information we ascertained from the audience research we got typical codes and conventions of the indie genre. we also found from our questionnaire what the audience expects to be in a typical indie video so this helped me and James build on ideas and brainstorm ideas because we knew what had to be our video which would give us the beset outcome fulfilling the needs of what the audience wanted the video to contain. We concluded that a stage environment was not typical in an indie pop promo that most indie promo were based in an urban environment due to this we decided to film in Stamford and have performance and narrative in an urban environment to fulfil typical codes on conventions of an indie pop promo. Also from my audience research i found that not asking just one age group helps as we focussed particularly on the 6th form I believe it would have been ideal to get gain opinions on a wider age group as our results were  very similar.

Facebook and you tube were found to be a great tool for audience feedback because we could feedback from a wide range or audience including the 99s. the feedback we got was very positive however there were comments about the lighting was not up to scratch in place so if we were to it again we would not just use natural light but in fact look into different lighting methods.

Q4 How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages

I used blogger throughout the planning and research stage to ensure everything was up to date and everything was already organised such as costumes plan of shot etc. This helped ensure when it came to the shoot day we were all sorted and organised.

Also throughout the research and planning stage of the promotional video we used youtube.com to ascertain information into the indie genre which gave us information on typical conventions of indie promotional videos and what the audience would usually expect to see in an indie promo. Looking on youtube.com we were able to see what past students had created and see what sort of production we would have to generate too get what grades this helped to see what we had to include in the promotional video. I also found youtube.com to be a great source for audience feedback as it gave a true representation of what people thought of the promotional video not just family and friends.

From the beginning of A2 I believe Filming skills have increase as I know look more in detail in what the shot is capturing and whether not the shot it well lit as my composition of shot has improved. These developed skills developed during the process of creating the promo as we had to use lots of shot types and pans to entice the audience and get the best possible Promotional video I could. Also during the construction of the promotional video I became more familiar with I movie and Photoshop whilst creating the ancillary tasks becoming really familiar with these technologies allowed us to put a real professional look on promotional video as we were able to play with the footage and make it more clear as we had problems with lighting which aided in developing a successful pop promo. I movie really helped with our music as there were many ways we could overcome our problems such as with the lip syncing we were able to speed up and slow ith down and use precision editor to get them synced up as best we could this played a major part in the outcome of our production.

We looked and Facebook as form to achieve audience research and feedback as it’s a good way to ascertain information quickly and it gets a wide set of results of our target audience. Facebook also helped in the creation of our production  as we were able to contact the 99s on their fan page to ascertain lyrics and permission and information about the band which also had videos of the band performing live at gig so we were able to see what look they went for etc.

A2 Media Studies Music Promo

Editing

we used imovie software on the apple macs to edit our music video as its simple to use. we were able to cut and put transitions in on this to make the music promo a more interesting bit of footage to watch. we were also able to lip sync it using precision editor and crop the film so the shots seemed more professional by putting a stabilizer on. we were also able to play with contrast and saturation using imovie where there was low levels of light we able to improve on the footage making it more visually pleasing.

Day 2 The actual shoot

The second day was a success due to our planning of the previous day we got the earliest bus we could meaning we were able to record more and had longer opportunity to do so. that night we reviewed the footage and were pretty much sure we had enough to work with.

Day one of the big shoot

Day one did not go too plan as we were unable to shoot as we could not get hold of the relevant equipment due too many being lent opportunity to record had to be postponed however we travelled to Stamford to that day to plan out the shoot for the following day.

Plan of shoot

Day 1
-gather narrative footage at park
-gather performance footage
-Explore possible places in stamford at night where there good oppertunities to shoot because of lighting
Day 2
-Review footage in morning
-Travel to Stamford to record any footage required.

What is a Music promo

The Purpose of a music promo is too contact the audience directly promoting the song to its fan it used as a easy way to promote the new release and its used to make the song visually exciting whilst listing also as narrating the song.

Performers role

The performer role will need be able :
- Lip sync in time to track with out over doing it .
-Must be dressed suitable to genre shirt over coat pumps etc.
-be convincing as the artist
-be convincing whilst acting in the memories.

Conventions of an Indie music video

Camera
in indie promo there are various shot types like a mid shot when they are preforming to show off their musical tallents or an extreme close up or close up when singing to empathise the mood of the track. during the narrative there combinations of shots including a long shot to set the scene of the track at the begginig

Editing

The editing in music promos are usually Are usually quick passed to keep the audience interested  and this is also because there is allot to put into a musical promo. sometimes they are cut to beat of the song. the edits in a music promo tend to be straight cuts. but in a slower song with nice melody there tends to fade to black to compliment the music and mood its trying to convey.

Mise-en-scene
the mise en scene in the indie genre tends the clothing in my mood board the hipster/vintage look with the clothing or a very easy laid back suburban look. the props you will see in and indie promo will be the instruments relevant to band weather or not they combine performance and narrative.

During are research into the indie genre we looked into the typical mise-en-scene which would be ideal for our promotional video.
we looked at many bands in that genre :

Vampire weekend

A-Punk

Camera Work

In Vampire Weekend they do no not follow The  typical conventions of a typical indie music video as it just a long shot fro the video there is no shot variation what so ever this not typical amongst this genre as you would expect shot variation.

Editing

During the video there no transitions however, there is only one effect during the entire video is that it is fast forward through out the whole video this is where its unique as this is unheard of within the genre but the effect has a good effect as it coincides withe up beat tempo and works really well in the music promo.

Mise-en-scene
In the music promo they represent  their genre very well with costumes fitting the typical indie kid with what they were wearing. the location of the video is a studio which is not very typical off the genre as most indie music videos tend to be outside or on stage.

Lighting

lighting is used to light the set from the front throughout the whole film.During the film there is two lighting effects the first one is they use dim the lightning to give the effect of passing time or change of scenery. the other lighting effect is where the put a blue filter over the light to give the effect they are under water.

Preformance/Narative

The band in the video follow the indie expectation having a good combination of preformance3 with a little narrative the narrative in the video has no relevance to their lyrics. the preformanbce of the video is really eye catching as the drum beat is in sync with the movement of the band, this is a bitunconventional as this not the typical expectation of a indie music video.
